It is
important to know where the internet has come from to fully appreciate where it
is and where it is going. “ARPANET: Commonly thought of as the predecessor to
the Internet and created by the US Department of Defenses Advanced Research
Projects Agency (ARPA). ( New Media Institute, 2014)” In 1965 two computers
were linked for the first time by Lincoln Labs and Q-32 mainframe which enable
the first ever computer to computer communication.( New Media Institute, 2014)
The first commercial personal was available in 1975 and shortly after; Steve
Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer in 1976.(New Media Institute,
2014)The first domain was launched in 1984 and in 1990 the world wide web or
www as we know it was formed. (New Media Institute, 2014)
When it comes to the internet I could have never imagined how essential it would be in life. Although many people are addicted to social media sites; the internet is a huge asset in day to day life. Being able to communicate through email, Skype, and social media not only keep families separated by distance, together; but also allow major business to be done. Expenses can be cut for a business by conducting transactions over a video teleconference rather than trying half way around the world to close a deal. The internet allows for communication through, chat rooms, discussion forums, and also allows students to attend college while setting in their house naked if they so choose.
The internet allows people to travel the world from the
comfort of their own home. If someone has no money to travel they could visit
web pages through the internet and see the great pyramids or the Eiffel Tower.
With the invention of Google in 1998 and YouTube there is nothing someone
cannot look up or see. Videos on YouTube also allow task to be seen before
attempting to execute them like changing the oil in your car. The internet is
such a huge communication tool. It enables other media flat forms to exist and
excel such as the telephone.
