Used often, but highly
overlook is the walkie talkie or hand held radio. . The walkie talkie was
invented by Donald L. Hings of Canada in 1937. (Walkie Talkie, n.d) The ability
to walk and talk or communicate while on the go is highly important. The
military uses them in many different forms as well as regular civilians who
like to be outdoors. The CB radio is a type of a hand held which allows
communication to take place while a trucker is driving down the road. Hunters
use hand held radios to communicate while deep in the woods to stay in contact
with others. Although there are many platforms that the walkie talkie is used
with such as headsets by NASCAR drivers to talk to their crew; they all operate
on radio waves, frequency, and output strength.

Telephone
The
telephone created by Alexander Graham Bell revolutionized communication. Due to
the telegraph, no longer was the Pony Expressed required to communicate with
some the next town over. However, you would still have to leave your home to go
send the telegram. The telephone has gradually evolved into small computers
everyone carries in their pocket. The internet can be accessed through smart
phones as well as video chatting. Do you think Bell would have ever imagined
his invention would be transformed to what it is today? Technological advances have taken leaps and
bounds from having to call an operator to be connected to someone else.
Again whether personal or professional,
the telephone or cell phone has revolutionized communication. The cell phone is
also responsible for such a hurried lifestyle and failed interpersonal
relationship development. Hardly ever do you see a parent actually watching
their kids play at the park because they are on their cell phone. While in a
waiting room at the doctor’s office very little conversation occurs because
everyone is using their phones. My family and I went to dinner one night and
seen a family of four out together. Both parents and their kids were setting at
the dinner table on their phones. Although communication through media is very
convenient and beneficial we must invest efforts into not losing true social
skills and face to face interaction.
Internet
It is
important to know where the internet has come from to fully appreciate where it
is and where it is going. “ARPANET: Commonly thought of as the predecessor to
the Internet and created by the US Department of Defenses Advanced Research
Projects Agency (ARPA). ( New Media Institute, 2014)” In 1965 two computers
were linked for the first time by Lincoln Labs and Q-32 mainframe which enable
the first ever computer to computer communication.( New Media Institute, 2014)
The first commercial personal was available in 1975 and shortly after; Steve
Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer in 1976.(New Media Institute,
2014)The first domain was launched in 1984 and in 1990 the world wide web or
www as we know it was formed. (New Media Institute, 2014)
Television
Electronic television
was first successfully demonstrated in San Francisco on Sept. 7, 1927. The
system was designed by Philo Taylor Farnsworth, a 21-year-old inventor who had
lived in a house without electricity until he was 14.(Stephen, n.d.) It is hard
to believe that the T.V. has only been around less than 100 years. Think about those
older generations such as the baby boomers and older being able remember
actually not having a television and now seeing how times have changed.
"By the late 1990s, 98 percent of U.S. homes had at least one television set, and those sets were on for an average of more than seven hours a day. The typical American spends (depending on and the time of year) from two-and-a-half to almost five hours a day watching television." (Stephens, n.d.)
