Walkie Talkie/Handheld Radio

Used often, but highly overlook is the walkie talkie or hand held radio. . The walkie talkie was invented by Donald L. Hings of Canada in 1937. (Walkie Talkie, n.d) The ability to walk and talk or communicate while on the go is highly important. The military uses them in many different forms as well as regular civilians who like to be outdoors. The CB radio is a type of a hand held which allows communication to take place while a trucker is driving down the road. Hunters use hand held radios to communicate while deep in the woods to stay in contact with others. Although there are many platforms that the walkie talkie is used with such as headsets by NASCAR drivers to talk to their crew; they all operate on radio waves, frequency, and output strength.

The hand held radio or walkie talkie is used as a backup for most people. Unlike the telephone or internet the radio works without having to rely or power. Although batteries are used to power them, communication can be executed if the power goes out, the telephone is not working, or a disaster has occurred. For around $100 a quality walkie talkie can be purchased that can be used to communicate over several miles. This a what I consider to be a steadfast media foundation. This form of communication can save lives and I encourage everyone to have a set in their home.

Many people have used a radio and probably have not even realized it. Most parents anyway. A baby monitor operates on radio frequency and transmits sound. Although most monitors only transmit one direction they are still considered a hand held radio. This would not have been possible without the initial application that Hings designed. Now baby monitors with video are available.
